What Questions Should I Ask a Wedding Catering Company Before Booking?

Choosing your wedding caterer is a pretty big decision. Food is one of the parts of a wedding guests genuinely remember, and your catering team will also play an important role in keeping the day running smoothly.
But when you first start speaking to wedding catering companies, it can be difficult to know exactly what you should be asking.
From menus and dietary requirements to staffing and hidden costs, getting a few important questions answered early can make choosing your caterer much easier. Here are some of the questions we'd recommend asking before you book.
1. Are You Available on Our Wedding Date?
It sounds obvious, but start here!
Popular wedding caterers can be booked months, sometimes well over a year, in advance, particularly for summer Saturdays.
Before spending time discussing menus and ideas, confirm that the company is available for your date and can cater at your chosen venue.
2. Can We Create a Bespoke Wedding Menu?
Your wedding menu shouldn't feel like something hundreds of other couples have already eaten.
Ask whether the caterer offers fixed packages or can create something specifically for you. A good wedding catering company should want to hear about the food you love, the atmosphere you're creating, and how you imagine your guests eating on the day.
At Street Food and More, we're big believers in creating menus around the couple rather than telling couples what their wedding food needs to look like.
3. What Styles of Wedding Catering Do You Offer?
There's much more to wedding food than the traditional three-course meal.
Depending on your venue and the atmosphere you want, you might consider:
Canapés
Sharing feasts
BBQ catering
Street food
Bowl food
Mobile catering
Festival-style food
Evening food
Ask your caterer what's possible rather than assuming you're limited to one particular format.
If you're planning an outdoor, marquee, tipi or less traditional celebration, mobile wedding catering can be particularly useful because the catering setup can be brought directly to your venue.
4. Can You Cater for Dietary Requirements and Allergies?
You may have vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free or allergy-related requirements within your guest list.
Ask potential caterers how they manage dietary requirements, when they need the final information and how alternative dishes will be handled on the day.
Importantly, dietary options shouldn't feel like an afterthought. Every guest should get a meal that has had the same care and attention as the rest of the menu.
5. Have You Catered at Our Type of Venue Before?
Your caterer doesn't necessarily need to have worked at your exact venue, but they should be comfortable operating in that type of environment.
For example, catering in a country house with a professional kitchen can be very different from catering in a field, tipi, marquee or private garden.
Ask what facilities they'll require, including access, electricity, water and preparation space.
Experienced wedding caterers should be able to talk you through the practical requirements rather than leaving you to figure everything out yourself.
6. What's Actually Included in the Price?
This is an important one.
When comparing wedding catering quotes, make sure you're comparing like-for-like services. A cheaper initial quote isn't necessarily cheaper once staffing, equipment and other requirements have been added.
Ask exactly what's included, such as:
Food
Chefs
Waiting staff
Equipment
Crockery and cutlery
Setup and clearing away
Travel
VAT
You should have a clear idea of the overall cost before committing.
7. How Will Service Work on the Day?
Great food is only half the job. It also needs to reach your guests efficiently.
Ask how your chosen menu will actually be served and how long the caterer expects service to take.
If you're feeding 150 guests, for example, you don't want the first guests finishing their food while the final tables are still waiting.
An experienced caterer should plan staffing and service around your guest numbers and wedding schedule.
8. Can We Have a Tasting?
A tasting can help turn ideas on a page into something much more tangible.
It allows you to try dishes, discuss presentation and make adjustments before finalising the menu.
Ask your caterer whether tastings are available, when they're normally arranged and whether there's an additional charge.
9. What Happens If Our Plans Change?
Wedding plans evolve.
Guest numbers can change, timings move and dietary requirements sometimes appear surprisingly close to the big day.
Ask your caterer when they need final numbers and how flexible they can be if something changes.
You want a team that's organised enough to have a clear plan but experienced enough to adapt when necessary.
10. Do We Actually Feel Comfortable With This Team?
This one isn't really a question for your caterer, it's a question for yourselves.
You'll probably communicate with your catering company several times before the wedding, and they'll be an important supplier on the day itself. You should feel comfortable asking questions, sharing ideas and trusting them to get on with the job.
Experience and food quality matter enormously, but so does having people around you who understand what you're trying to create.
Finding the Right Wedding Catering Company
Ultimately, choosing a wedding catering company isn't just about picking a menu. You're choosing a team that will help look after you and your guests during one of the biggest celebrations of your lives.
Ask plenty of questions, be clear about what matters to you and don't be afraid to suggest something different.
At Street Food and More, we work collaboratively with couples to create wedding menus that suit their tastes, venue, budget and plans for the day. From relaxed outdoor celebrations and sharing feasts to more elaborate receptions, we'll help you create catering that feels like it belongs at your wedding.
